How to Create a Google Business Profile for Your Plumbing Company
Why Google Business Profile Matters More Than Almost Anything Else
When a homeowner searches “plumber near me,” the first thing they see isn’t a list of websites. It’s a map with three local businesses highlighted in what Google calls the “Map Pack.” Those three listings get the majority of the clicks. Everything below them is an afterthought.
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is what determines whether you’re in that box. It’s free, it’s powerful, and most plumbers either haven’t claimed it or have set it up halfway.
This guide walks you through exactly how to create, verify, and optimize your Google Business Profile so your plumbing company shows up when customers are ready to call.

Step 1: Claim or Create Your Listing
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account you control. Search for your business name. If Google has already created a listing for your business (this happens automatically based on web data), claim it. If not, create a new one.
Choose your primary business category carefully. For a plumbing company, select “Plumber” as the primary category. You can add secondary categories like “Drain Cleaning Service” or “Water Heater Repair Service” once the profile is live.
- If you have a physical office or shop: Enter your address. Customers can then see your location on the map.
- If you’re a mobile-only plumbing business: You can hide your address and just show your service area. Google allows this for service-area businesses.
Step 2: Verify Your Business
Google requires verification before your profile goes live in search results. The most common method is a postcard mailed to your business address with a 5-digit code. This usually takes 5–10 business days.
Some businesses qualify for instant verification by phone or email — Google will show you the options available for your account. Complete verification as soon as you get the code; an unverified profile doesn’t appear in Maps or search results.
Step 3: Fill Out Every Field — Completely
Google rewards completeness. A fully filled-out profile ranks higher than a sparse one. Here’s what to prioritize:
- Business name. Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your license. Don’t keyword-stuff it (e.g., “ABC Plumbing — Best Plumber in Chicago”) — Google can suspend listings for this.
- Phone number. Use your primary business number. Make sure it matches what’s on your website and other directories.
- Website URL. Link to your main website homepage. If you don’t have a professional website, this is the single biggest gap to fix.
- Hours of operation. Including emergency or after-hours availability. If you take emergency calls, say so here.
- Service area. List every city, town, and zip code where you actively take jobs. Google uses this to match you with nearby searches.
- Services. Add individual services: drain cleaning, water heater installation, pipe repair, sewer line service, etc. Each service is a keyword signal for Google.
- Business description. Write 2–3 sentences about your company in plain language. Include your city, your main services, and something that sets you apart (licensed & insured, 24/7 emergency service, family-owned for 15 years, etc.).
Step 4: Add Photos — As Many as Possible
Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks than those without. Google’s own data shows that businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more click-throughs to websites.
- Logo. Upload a clean version of your company logo.
- Cover photo. A professional photo of your truck, your crew, or a job site. This is the main image customers see.
- Job photos. Before-and-after shots of work you’ve completed. Water heater replacements, pipe repairs, bathroom remodels — any quality photo of real work.
- Team photos. A photo of you and/or your crew builds trust. Customers like putting a face to the name before inviting someone into their home.
Aim for at least 10 photos when you launch, and add new ones every month or two.
Step 5: Get Your First Reviews
Reviews are the single biggest factor in whether customers choose you over a competitor who also shows up in the Map Pack. A plumber with 45 reviews and a 4.8 rating will get more calls than one with 5 reviews and a 4.9.
After every completed job, send a simple follow-up text or email asking for a Google review. Include a direct link — Google provides a short review link in your Business Profile dashboard. Most customers won’t think to leave a review unless you make it easy and ask.
Never buy reviews, offer discounts for reviews, or ask in bulk from past customers all at once. Google’s algorithm detects unnatural review patterns and can suppress or suspend your listing.
Step 6: Use Google Posts to Stay Active
Google lets you publish short posts directly to your Business Profile — these appear in your listing when someone finds you in search. Use them to announce seasonal offers (spring drain cleaning specials, water heater efficiency upgrades), share a recent job photo, or post a quick tip.
Posting once or twice a month signals to Google that your business is active, which is a minor but real ranking factor. It also gives customers more information to see before they call.
The Missing Piece: A Website That Backs Up Your Profile
Your Google Business Profile and your website work together. A strong profile gets you into the Map Pack. Your website is what turns that click into a call.
When someone clicks through to your website, they need to see a professional, fast-loading page with your services, your service area, your phone number front and center, and a way to request a quote or book. If your site looks outdated or takes 10 seconds to load, the profile work you did doesn’t matter — they’ll go back and call the next plumber.
GroundWork gives plumbing companies a website that’s built to convert those Map Pack clicks into real customers. Local SEO built in, click-to-call on every page, lead capture forms, and review request tools — everything that works alongside your Google Business Profile.

FAQ: Google Business Profile for Plumbers
- How long does it take to show up in Google Maps after verifying? After verification, your listing typically becomes visible within a few days. But ranking in the Map Pack for competitive terms like “plumber near me” takes time — it depends on the number of reviews, your website’s quality, and how complete your profile is. Most plumbers see meaningful improvement within 60–90 days of a fully optimized profile.
- What if there’s already a listing for my business that I didn’t create? Google sometimes auto-generates listings from public data. Claim it rather than creating a duplicate. Search for your business in Google Maps, click “Claim this business,” and go through the verification process. Duplicate listings split your reviews and rankings — always claim and merge rather than creating a new one.
- Do I need a Google Business Profile if I already have a website? Yes. They serve different purposes. Your website tells your full story and converts visitors. Your Google Business Profile gets you into local search results and Maps — which is where most local plumbing searches happen. You need both working together.
